10 Mistakes To
Avoid When
Building A Log
Home
  1. Make your decision based on the lowest price. Skimping on the log package so you
can afford more amenities will come back to haunt you. Invest in the shell and upgrade items
    like flooring and fixtures later.
  2. Failure to fire a builder or contractor if you don't like their work. Even with careful
research, you may not enjoy a positive experience. If you are unhappy with their work,
    consider looking for another.
  3. Assume all the amenities you want are included in your package. Know the difference
between basic, 'dry-in' and 'turn-key' packages so you can comparison shop. Make sure you
    are comparing apples to apples...
  4. Become enamored with aesthetics. Design your home to fit your lifestyle.
  5. Making unnecessary changes after construction starts. Structural changes add up
quickly and can blow your budget, not to mention the time of going back to the building
    department for approval.
  6. Assuming plans will conform to codes. Codes regarding height, snow or wind loads and
seismic zones may vary. Some communities even have color and materials guidelines. Ask
about local design and code requirements before you buy your property or a log package.
  7. Building if you are going through major life changes. It may be called a dream home,
but it can be very stressful on it's own without having a baby, caring for a family member or
coping with your own health challenges. You will need all the energy and free time you can
    spare.
  8. Choosing your log home dealer because you like their floor plans. Every company
can customize a plan, so it's unnecessary to base your decision on the plan. Instead,
consider the quality of the manufacturer's products and the company's service.
  9. Basing decisions on convenience. Research the log home industry as a whole. You
won't necessarily pay higher freight charges if you choose an out-of-state log producer.
  10. Losing your sense of humor. You will run into obstacles no matter what. Rely on your
builder and other contractors to help you and don't get discouraged when the process hits
    snags.
